A standout academic achiever, Kate graduated as an Honors Program student at Alderson-Broaddus College, maintaining an impeccable 4.0-grade point average before ultimately earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from West Virginia University in December 1993, graduating cum laude as an Honors Program Scholar. Kate obtained her Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1998.
Following her academic pursuits, Kate began her legal career in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia before returning to her roots in Barbour County. Once back in Barbour County, she worked as an associate attorney with H. Gerard Kelley in Philippi, focusing on representing injured persons in cases ranging from automobile collisions to slip and fall incidents, product liability, and workplace injuries.
Kate is licensed to practice law in both the State of West Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia, and she has been admitted before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, and various federal courts in both states. She is an active member of several prestigious legal organizations, including the American Association for Justice (AAJ), West Virginia Association of Justice (WVAJ), the American Bar Association, the West Virginia Bar Association, and the Virginia Bar Association. Kate’s commitment to her profession is further demonstrated through her previous role as a representative for Barbour, Preston, Taylor, and Tucker Counties on the Young Lawyers Executive Committee of the West Virginia State Bar, where she contributed to the revision of the handbook on Attorney IOLTAs for use by attorneys throughout the state.
